Episode Summary

Welcome to the inaugural episode of Branches Between Generations, a video podcast series and community movement hosted by Clinton Nellis. Filmed in the beautiful community of Parksville, British Columbia, this series is dedicated to connecting students from the digital age with seniors living in Canada’s retirement capital. By bringing together strangers from completely different eras, this project aims to spark meaningful conversations and build a stronger, more connected community.

A Walk Through Parksville’s Past

In our first interview, we sit down at Podio Studio with Liz, who has lived in the Oceanside area since 1948, and Jet, a local teen born in 2012. Together, they explore how life in Parksville has evolved:

  • Early Parksville: Liz shares her experiences growing up in a two-room cabin with no running water and relying on an outhouse and an outdoor pump.
  • Community Entertainment: Liz recalls the excitement of watching the local adult baseball team, the Parksville Loggers, play in front of packed grandstands in the 1950s.
  • The Original Sandcastles: Long before it became a massive festival, the original sandcastle competition lasted just one day because the incoming tide would wash everything away!.
  • A Royal Visit: Liz also reminisces about the historic 1952 visit of Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip, right before she became Queen.

Understanding Generational Challenges

In the second half of the episode, we are joined by Bonnie Brown and Alice Tulia from the Society of Organized Services (SOS) District 69. They share their expert insights into the unique hurdles faced by different age groups today:

  • The Youth Experience: Today’s teens face the distinct pressures of the digital age, including social media comparison, the need to build a digital identity, and the resulting impacts on mental health.
  • The Senior Experience: Seniors, on the other hand, often face technological barriers, fixed incomes, and the heavy emotional toll of grief and loss over the years.
  • Finding Common Ground: Despite these differences, Alice and Bonnie emphasize that simply sitting down to listen to one another’s stories without judgment is the most powerful way to bridge the generational divide.

Grab a cup of coffee and enjoy the very first episode of Branches Between Generations. Don’t forget to stay tuned for Episode 2, where we will be discussing love and partnerships!.
